Spyderco Caly 3: Perfect EDC

If you are looking for a high quality folding pocket knife, the Spyderco knives are where to look first. The Spyderco Caly 3 is an excellent every day carry(edc) knife. It is small, elegant, and you will hardly notice it in your pocket. It will be very rare to find a bad review on the Caly 3. For what it is, it is close to perfection. The Spyderco Caly 3 comes in 2 different forms. A carbon fiber handle with zdp blade steel and a G10 handle with VG-10 blade steel. I opted to get the G10 version as it is more practical and the steel is easier to sharpen albeit slightly inferior. This knife is small! it is very compact. The reason I choose to carry this knife had much to do with my state law. In Rhode Island, it is illegal to carry a knife with blade length longer than 3 inches. You have to play the cards you are dealt. Besides the size, I noticed that it was extremely comfortable in hand. The ergonomics are incredible. I am 5'10" and have medium hands. It fits perfectly. The Knife does not look like a traditional knife but do not let the looks fool you. It is incredibly comfortable to hold. It is a bit heavier than my Spyderco Delica Wave, but in a good way. The Caly 3 feels high quality and durable.

Out of the box, the deployment was not very fast. It had a sandy sound while opening and it would sometimes get stuck midway. After a few hundred openings, it's perfect. Not too loose that it will open in my pocket and not too tight. I can flick it easily and it will lock up with an authoritative click. The lockup is rock solid. No blade play whatsoever. If I can describe the lockup in 1 word, it would be "confident." One of the reasons I choose a Caly 3 was it's lock back design. My being left handed, I always pass a liner lock design as they are always tailored towards right handers. Any knife that is not ambidextrous is passed. Luckily, this wonderful knife is available to both southpaws and orthodox. The pocket clip is great. It is a hard wire "paper clip" design but it works. It allows the knife to ride deep into the pocket and it is very strong. You can slip you knife in a out of pocket easily. All Spyderco's should adopt this clip. It is a great design. Much better than the clip on my Native.

The blade is very thin. The grind is full flat grind. This means the bevel starts at the spine of the blade making the edge come to a very thin point. The angle is more acute making this blade an excellent slicer. I am fairly good at sharpening. I can put a decent honing edge sharpening freehand. Lately, I have been using the Spyderco Sharpmaker to sharpen my knives. I recommend using the Sharpmaker simply because it makes sharpening easier. It is no substitute for freehand sharpening but it's definitely convenient.

Some time ago, I saw a youtube video where someone modified their knife with a zip tie. They used the zip tie as an Emerson wave. A waved knife is a modified knife that allows you to deploy the knife as you pull it out of your pocket. I had a Delica Wave that I liked and decided to modified my Caly 3 with the zip tie. The results were great. It works pretty good and it does not look too bad. I use my knives hard. It is a good idea to take care of your knives but using your knife is important too.

I love this knife! I also own a Spyderco Native and I used to own a Delica Wave. The Caly 3 is my favorite knife. If the laws would allow it, I would carry a Police 3 G10. Spyderco makes great knives and once you own 1, you have to have more. This knife is so beautiful. It is a gentleman's folder. I purchased mine for around $100 but I am sure you can get it cheaper now. Either way, you will be glad you bought this knife. This knife is a jewel.

The Bellagio is a very elaborate and nicely presented hotel that just screams class. It's most remembered for the fountains directly in front of the hotel. It offers plenty of fine dining options, and is a sight to behold. During your trip, you should take a look at the Botanical Gardens. It is an elaborate inside garden that they change throughout the year.

The Venetian is an Italian themed hotel. It has gondolas that go inside the mall, and in front of the hotel. Guests can actually ride in them with singing gondoliers. You will find all of these places stunning, and absolutely wonderful. Keep in mind if you are looking for $1 drafts or $5 blackjack you won't find it in these places. Be prepared to shell out a few extra dollars, but at the same time, if you can afford it the service and amenities in these hotels are second to none. Sometimes you just have to spoil yourself.

Mr. Strasburg: I understand how much hype you've gotten as a pitching prospect and I know how dominant you were in college. I, too, believe that you have an amazing set of pitches and could go really far in the majors. At the same time, I think you're being utterly ridiculous to insist on $50 million when you've never played a baseball game as a pro. I have many reasons for the basis of my opinion.

One example is Mark Prior. Having pitched with USC and declared the best young pitcher in the country hands down, the Cubs signed Prior to a huge deal before he ever pitched a game. While it looked for a flash as if he may have very well lived up to expectations, his career was dealt a crippling blow as he was hit with injures. Injuries from which he's never been able to recover.

Then there's Ben McDonald. About 20 years back, the LSU pitcher was just as hyped up as you are Prior, and he even led the US baseball team to a gold medal at the Olympics. McDonald only lasted nine seasons as a pro baseball pitcher, and hardly anyone today remembers his name.

Oh, and how about Rick Ankiel? I remember the expectations he carried, and the Cards signed him to a huge deal too. He even pitched some great baseball while in the minors for the Cardinals.

Many of his traits were just like yours. Same arsenal of dangerous pitches that you have. Somehow, midway through his stint in the minors, he lost his effectiveness and could no longer pitch like he did. Lucky for him, he found his place in the outfield.

And it's not just baseball where this happens. It happens in nearly every sport. Let's look at some players like Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell (more recently) in football, or players like Kwame Brown, Shawn Bradley, and Michael Olowakandi in basketball. It seems like it happens everywhere.

I do love the potential you've shown the baseball world and I do think that you have what it takes to be an exceptional pitcher. Unfortunately, all rookies carry a degree of risk, even the best of them. You're no exception to this rule.

Why Tiger's Loss is More Than Just a Loss

In a very interesting and atypical twist today, Tiger Woods blew a lead entering the final round of the PGA Championships, losing to Y.E. Yang, a relatively unknown golfer. Woods had simply never lost a major after leading or being tied for the lead, and the world was shocked after witnessing today's events.

Yay? I don't think the PGA, it's sponsors, or the casual golf fan are very happy. Tiger Woods in the starter, middle reliever, and closer for the PGA. Without Tiger, as we saw last year, no one cares. Now, people are getting the feeling that Tiger has lost it. He didn't win a major this year and pretty much choked away the PGA Championship after missing the cut at the British Open.

Tiger hasn't lost it, he's won 5 tournaments this year, coming from 5 strokes back on Sunday to win one, and coming back from 8 shots down Thursday to win by 3 strokes on Sunday. But, as I said, casual golf fans don't get that. In fact, most sports fans probably don't get that because he hasn't performed in the biggest events, the Majors, the moneymakers, the events that pull in the biggest ratings.

Yang winning is good, at the moment. But looking back 20 or 30 years from now, wouldn't you rather tell your kids or grandchildren about how the greatest golfer of all time beat some other guy in a 12-hole playoff after holing out from the fairway on 18. Wouldn't you rather have told your grandkids about how Tom Watson, the old geezer like you, won the British Open instead of pushing an 8 foot putt way to the right and self-destructing in a 4 hole playoff?

Yet, this pushes it to another level. You're talking about the greatest golfer on Earth, losing to some no-name from South Korea who probably won't win another major. If Tiger had won, it would've given hope to next year, a hope maybe he finally does what he was destined to do, win all the major in the same year and pass Jack Nicklaus for the most Major wins ever.

And for the 2009 golf season, there's not exactly much that fans can look forward to at this point. Will a Fedex Cup tournament excite them? Not exactly. There's really not much to look for.

Tiger must bounce back in 2009. He is the face of the PGA, and any story lines lacking Tiger Woods will do anything but help the sport grow.

Here's to hoping that 2010 brings us a Tiger resurgence, and most notably, a major or two. The sport really needs it.

An Incredible NFL Season in New England

This ensemble included future dynasty members such as Tedy Bruschi, Adam Vinatieri, Ted Johnson, Ty Law, Willie McGinest, and Troy Brown. Being a season ticket holder since 1994, I grew up with these players. I saw their careers develop right before my eyes at my bench seats in Foxboro stadium and the future Gillette Stadium. How many people can say they saw the birth and maturation of a Dynasty?



The 1996 season was monumental point in Patriots History. It started as most seasons did in the late 80's and 90's, SLOW. The Patriots started off 0-2 but won 10 of their next 13 games going to a hostile Giants Stadium. The Patriots needed this game to hold on to the division lead over the Buffalo Bills.

I remember being stuck helping my dad fix the furnace during this game. I left the TV on and had the volume blaring. I faked numerous bathroom breaks to check the score. I couldn't believe they were getting smoked 22-0 in the first half. I was dejected. Would they even make the playoffs? The TV stayed on. The comeback began. My Dad was looking for me all over the house. Meggett ran a punt back to cut the lead to 22-17. I was going crazy, but could they win it?!?!

I checked back a little later, and saw the Patriots in a position to score and win the game. Defying the odds, the team scored one last touchdown on a Drew Bledsoe pass to Ben Coates and won the game.

The Patriots were playoff bound! My friends and I couldn't believe it, and watched all of the games leading up to the Pats' showdown with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags had upset the Broncos in a game that everyone thought Denver would easily win, so the Patriots would play Jacksonville.

I remember you couldn't see a thing between the fog and smoke from the pyrotechnics. However, I did get to see rookie wide-out sensation, Terry Glenn's acrobatic catch at the goal line leading to the 28-3 victory. Bring on the Jags!! I remember that day like it was yesterday. It was freezing! The wind was wailing. We had no grill. My friends and I ended up eating subway ice cube sandwiches. My friend Cam forgot his ticket at home. However, none of these things could snuff Super Bowl fever which was gripping Foxboro stadium! My friends and I entered the stadium at bit toasty to combat the arctic weather outside. Our butts were frozen to the ice slabs which doubled for benches. It was game time!

The Patriots came out with a furious flurry. The game was over before the Jags even walked on the field. The Patriots built a 13-3 lead going into the 4th quarter. Everyone in New England was waiting for certain implosion. Gritting their teeth. Putting on their favorite Pats T-shirt. Sitting in their super bad spirit slaying chair. Praying. Otis Smith let everyone breathe easy. He scooped up a fumble and galloped 47 yards for the decisive touchdown. After 5 cups of hot chocolate, my lips thawed so I could finally scream SUPER BOWL!!!

Everyone was ecstatic. The Pats had somehow defied the odds and reached the Super Bowl, bringing the city's feelings about the franchise to a new level altogether. They didn't win this one, but rumbling beneath the surface was the foundation of a dynasty that would blow us all away.
