Requiem for a Heavyweight: Solemn account of boxer, Quinn, whose ring occupation is over, pushing him into corruption and degradation. His sleazy supervisor Gleason, understanding teacher Rooney, and Harris as unrealistic city employee are all fine. Cast includes Anthony Quinn, Jackie Gleason, Mickey Rooney, Julie Harris, Nancy Cushman, Madame Spivy, and Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali). (100 minutes, 1952)

Hoop Dreams: Magnificent documentary follows 2 Chicago central-city kids (Arthur Agee and William Bars), who have fantasies of basketball stardom, over 4 years' time. This quaint and immersing film plays like drama, not documentary, with the exception of that it takes spontaneous twists and turns no author might create. The film presents a scorching commentary on our school system, the indomitable power of the family, and the uncertainty of life. (109 minutes, 1994)

Red Sonja: SpectacuJarly stupid sword and magic myth with lady lead, based on mush writings of Robert E. Howard (of Conana popularity). May entertain adolescent watchers, although only point of interest for grownups is choosing who gives the worse acting job, Nielsen or villainess Bergman. Cast includes Brigitte Nielsen, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sandahl Bergman, Paul Smith, Emie Reyes, Jr., Ronald Lacey, and Pat Roach. (89 minutes, 1985)

Aguirre the Wrath of God: Commanding, spellbinding story of misled conquistador who leads a group of gentlemen away from Pizarro's 1560 South American journey looking for 7 cities of gold. Dreamlike film was shot on location in remote Amazon forests; Kinski is perfect as the crazy Aguirre. Cast includes Klaus Kinski, Ruy Guerra, Del Negro, Helena Rojo, Cecilia Rivera, and Peter Berling. (94 minutes, 1972)

Belle of the Yukon: Little musical of bar owner Scott going straight at request of his gal (Lee). The film is fast paced but very forgettable. Cast includes Randolph -Scott, Gypsy Rose Lee, Bob Burns, Dinah Beach, Charles Winninger, William Marshall, Guinn "Gigantic - Boy" Williams, and Robert Armstrong, (84 minutes, 1944)

Close Your Eyes: Scotland Yard investigator Henderson draws hypnothethapist Visnjic into a difficult case engaging a serial murderer and a little gal who's been shocked frombeing held hostage by him. Mixing occult factors with a whodunit, this unique, sincerely scary thriller stays on target right to the end. Cast includes Goran Visnjic, Shirley Henderson, Miranda Otto, Paddy Considine, Claire Rushbrook, Fiona Shaw, Coon Redgrave, and Sophie Stuckey (103 minutes, 2003)

The Great McGinty: Sturges' directorial debut (and Oscar winning screenplay) isn't up to his later comedy classics, however Donlevy is phenomenal as the bum who is put into the governor's chair by crooked partisans and then blows it all while he tries to be truthful. Cast includes Brian Donlevy, Muriel Angelus, Akim Tamiroff, Allyn Joslyn, and Louis Jean Heydt. (81 minutes, 1940)

The Little Shop of Horrors: Classic black comedy in reference to youthful schnook who creates bloodthirsty plant and is made to kill in request to fuel it with human blood. Originally notorious as the fIlm was shot In 2 Nights, however now thought to be one of Corman's best films. Nicholson has comical tad as masochist who flourishes on dental suffering; Cast includes Jonathan Cloud, Jackie Joseph, Mel Welles, Dick Miller, Myrtle Vail, and Jack Nicholson. (70 minutes, 1960)

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: A typical venture spectacle has Ford in fine form and Connery amalgamating panache as Indy's archaeologist dad, whose bizarre disappearance (when looking for the Holy Grail) sets the tale in motion. This intentionally old fashioned Saturday matinee has everything money might purchase, however on no account seriously creates a sense of marvel and enthusiasm. A certain advancement over the second Indiana Jones episode it still bears the mark of one too numerous trips to the well. Cast includes Harrison Ford, Sean Connery, Denholm Elliott, Alison Doody, John Rhys-Davies, Julian Glover, River Phoenix, Michael Byrne, and Alex Hyde-White. (127 minutes, 1989)
