A Delightful Opening NFL Game

By Sandy Rocksath

Someone bring Lendale White a towel. I suppose he might want to cover his head under one on his trip out of Pittsburgh.

During an evening where Troy Polamalu went down to a knee wound, Wille Parker and the remaining Steelers RB corps couldn't manage to get things going, and Hines Ward did something he hardly ever does - fumbled during a big play scenario. Ben Roethlisberger was firm in the back field, took a small number of sacks, however ultimately engineered yet one more game winning drive to help the Steelers outlast the Titans 13-10 in the NFL season opener.

It did not start off nicely for Big Ben and company; The Titans looked as good as ever and practically shut the Steelers rush game down.

Big Ben was composed under pressure, although. Yes, he threw two picks (Brett Favre does this all the time, yet there are fans willing to bow down to him when he enters a room, so get off this).

However he also passed for 363 yards, which included 60 yards during his last drive of the game.

Pittsburgh's defense rose to the occasion and performed when the chips were down, markedly when it came to special teams, where a blocked Rob Bironas FG resulted in their only touchdown of the game.

Of course, that play cost them Troy Polamalu, however it only set them back for a minute or two.

If Hines Ward had either fallen down or turned slightly faster at the end of his run in the 4th quarter, the game would have finished sooner.

Although this was too good a game to not go to overtime. Both organizations had fought their hearts out, both organizations had athletes sidelined to injury, and overtime seemed the only fair way to resolve things.

If, that is, you could deem NFL overtimes reasonable.

After Pittsburgh won the toss, Roethlisberger and the team made short work of a tired Tennessee defense, advancing downfield for 63 yards to arrange the game-winning field goal.
