What will you need to focus on when organising a quiz? A big prize? Plenty of alcohol? Fierce competition? Good company? Well, you should certainly be aiming for a few of these, even if in moderation.
Questions
It is a myth that the questions need to be really challenging for them to be considered good. Yes, quiz participants will want a challenge, but a balance will need to be met between the really tough and reasonably easy.
When I write a quiz I want about 25% of the questions to be answerable by most participants. I want another 25% to be tough enough that only a few can answer them correctly and the rest I aim for medium difficulty. The reason is because although you want to find a winner, you do not want to depress those who don't play regularly.
How big should the prize be?
Most people do not take part in a quiz for the prize. They take part because they want to be challenged and entertained, and obviously want to prove that they have superior knowledge to their peers. However, giving out the prize can also make the evening more fun - entice the winners to wager their prize for the chance of winning something better!
Spinning a wheel, answering another question, playing a Higher or Lower game of 5 cards, whatever!
The QuizMaster
A nervous quizmaster who does not confidently speak to a large crowd of quizzers, or who bows to demands of an extra point for an "almost correct" answer will make for a bad quiz night. The quizmaster should be confident, fair, firm, good humoured and patient.
Alcohol
Not an essential ingredient (unless held in a pub!) but a few beers for a fundraiser or social event can create a fun party atmosphere. You don't want to make people feel like they are taking part in an exam! Make it as fun as possible.
